Dr. Jan D. Miller, Professor in Metallurgical Engineering, to be Inducted into the National Academy of Inventors
Dr. Jan D. Miller, Distinguished Professor of Metallurgical Engineering, will be inducted as a fellow into the National Academy of Inventors on March 20, 2015 at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California.
In the words of the academy, the honor is "accorded to academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development and the welfare of society."
Jan D. Miller holds the Ivor D. Thomas Chair in Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Utah where he has served on its faculty for 45 years. He was the Chair of the Department from 2002 to 2013. He is well-known for his numerous technical contributions with more than 600 publications, including 32 patents.
Professor Miller is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Distinguished Member of SME. He has received honorary Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pretoria in South Africa and from Gdansk University of Technology in Poland. In addition, he has honorary professorial appointments from several universities in China and from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
