Dr. Kip Solomon appointed Francis Brown Presidential Endowed Chair
Congratulations to Distinguished Professor Kip Solomon, who has been approved by President Randall to be the next Francis Brown Presidential Endowed Chair in geology and geophysics, July 1, 2022-2025.Solomon received his PhD in Earth Sciences from the University of Waterloo, and BS and MS degrees from the U’s Department of Geology and Geophysics. He joined the department in 1993 after a decade of experience with USGS and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. From 2009-2013 he served as chair of the Department of Geology and Geophysics. Dr. Solomon is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America and has received numerous honors and awards, including a 2021 Outstanding Faculty Research Award from the University and many teaching awards. This endowed chair position is one of the University of Utah’s most meaningful and prestigious honors given its legacy and connection to Dean Francis Brown, who impacted the college in immeasurable ways over his career of nearly 50 years. “Needless to say, Frank would be proud to know that Dr. Solomon will help carry on his legacy,” says Darryl Butt, Dean of the College of Mines and Earth Sciences.
