Economic Geologist (Entry-Level)

 The Utah Geological Survey is looking for an early career economic geologist to join the Energy and Minerals team. Join one of the largest state surveys in the nation and take part in hands-on geological assessment and research of Utah's diverse mineral resources. 

As a Geologist in the minerals group, you will: 

  • Assist senior geologists with mineral resource evaluations and research projects through field work and lab-based activities (mapping, geochemistry, mineralogy, core logging, etc.). Multi-day travel for fieldwork should be expected. 
  • Help develop GIS datasets and visualizations to make Utah’s mineral resource information readily available to the public. 
  • Collaborate with the Utah Core Research Center, web services team, and other stakeholders to develop data organization strategies and curate historical geologic data. 
  • Liaise with members of the minerals industry, other state agencies, federal agencies, and academia about Utah’s mineral resources. 
  • Publish results from mineral projects and present outcomes in a variety of settings. 

The ideal candidate will possess: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in geosciences, Master’s degree helpful. 
  • Working knowledge of economic geology and mineral systems relevant to Utah (minerals industry experience advantageous but not required). 
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork over multiple days and experience with geologic mapping, collecting samples, minerals exploration, and/or comparable. 
  •  Experience with ArcGIS or equivalent GIS software and general computer literacy. 
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct, write-up, and present data-driven research. 
  • Meticulous attention to detail and exemplary data management skills. 
  • Excellent communication skills, the ability to be self-directed, and motivation to grow as an economic geologist.

Entry Level Junior Geologists and Field Technicians

Burgex Mining Consultants is currently looking for Jr. Geologists and Field Technicians for full-time and part-time work. If you like being outdoors and hiking this is an opportunity to get paid for doing those activities. We are looking for individuals who have a strong work ethic, sound understanding of geology, a willingness to do field work doing labor, and work well in a team setting.

About the Role:

The Jr. Geologist works with minimum direct supervision, providing a range of logistic and operations support to the team. The role encompasses both generalist field support tasks (e.g., camp set-up, basic maintenance, safety procedures) and specialized tasks (e.g., Know how to use a GPS, Technical writing (permits), GIS mapping). Burgex is willing to train on technical specifics, but an ideal candidate will already possess the skills and requirements listed below.

The work environment can vary widely based on geographic region and terrain. The position will be a hybrid of in office work and field work. The Jr, Geologist/Field Tech spends most of their time outside and can be exposed to extreme weather conditions. Burgex is based out of Sandy, UT; however, most of the field work will be conducted in the Western United States. Requirements:

  • Must be able to hike long distances in remote environments
  • Must be a self-starter and self-motivator
  • Be comfortable working alone outside
  • Have basic mechanic skills (i.e.: field repairs) Be a team player

Skills:

Hydrologist

As a Hydrologist within the Utah Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Assisting higher level hydrologists in conducting hydrologic studies by collecting hydrologic data in the field.
  • Collecting hydrologic data using a variety of methods and equipment.
  • Measuring the discharge of streams having a variety of depth and flow conditions.
  • Collecting and analyzes geologic samples to delineate and correlate aquifer systems and describe water-bearing characteristics.
  • Writing portions of interpretive reports of hydrologic studies and prepares hydrologic information in the form of maps, charts, or graphs for inclusion in reports.
  • Computing, analyzing and interpreting records of streamflow, water levels, pumpage, sediment quantities, or biological and chemical quality to assist in the scientific evaluation of hydrologic phenomena.
  • Operating a government vehicle as an incidental driver.
